You may have seen several Tesla models on the streets of India in 2021. According to media reports, Tesla has received approval for all seven electric variants in India.
Tesla only had four EV variants approved this August, but recent discoveries have paved the way for Elon Musk to enter the Indian electric car market. Three electric vehicle models were approved by the country’s Ministry of Road Transport this Monday.
The options and exact names haven’t been revealed to the public yet, but rumors have been mounting that Tesla will launch the Model 3S and Model YS on Indian roads first before making any serious commitments.
There’s no word yet on Tesla’s local production, but if the imported model is successful, the Tesla factory may not be far from the country.
All Tesla models are expensive in the US, but taxes can be higher than the price of a car after importing into India. This allows the entire EV market segment to be accessible only to the wealthy in the country.
Elon Musk has asked the Indian government to lower import duties to make cars accessible to ordinary people. At least a 40% discount is required for Tesla to test the market in India before opening a Giga factory.
However, many government officials stated that there is no opportunity to reduce taxes for a single company and get incentives from the government. This news might slow Tesla’s call a bit, but Elon Musk is sure trying to figure out how to solve the problem.
Tesla’s India operations are controlled by Prashant Menon, who has more than four years of experience with the company. Other announcements include the names of Weibhav Taneja, David Feinstein, and Venkatranham Sriram, who will run the business on behalf of the company.
