NIO gained European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (EWVTA) for its all electric SUV – the NIO ES8. EWVTA was a necessary basis for NIO’s entry into Norway and the European market at a large level.
This means that they can now sell the ES8 all-electric SUV and get license plate registration in all EU countries including some EU-related ones such as Norway.

NIO is another Chinese brand set to enter the European market after Xpeng, BYD and Aiways, as well as SAIC’s MG added plug-ins on top of their traditional lineup.
The NIO ES8 all-electric SUV will be sold first in Norway from September and then probably spread across all over Europe -covering some of the biggest EV markets.
Under Regulation (EU) 2018/858, type approval certification was issued to NIO ES8 and its systems, components and individual technical units after the relevant engineering audits and module approvals. EWVTA refers to a certification issued to a manufacturer for a vehicle type under the vehicle type-approval framework of the European Union. Regulation (EU) 2018/858, effective from 1 September 2020, has become the new statutory regulation for the acceptance of vehicle types in the European Union. This regulation improves the quality and freedom of vehicle testing and monitoring of cars already in the EU market.
The Chinese brand NIO will offer the ES8 through a direct sales and service network, and its broader offering will include NIO House, NIO App, Power Swap Station and NIO Life services for European users.

During the first five months of 2021, the company has sold around 7,451 ES8s in China, so thus even a few thousand sales during initial months in Europe will bring the company on front foot.
